51st BEMUS, the musical feast for the audience

This year’s Belgrade Music Festival takes place from 6 – 19 October, organized by the Belgrade Festivals Center (CEBEF).

 

According to Bojan Suđić, the artistic director of the festival, BEMUS promises a succession of first-rate music events, the quality of which stands hand in hand with the programs of the leading classical music festivals in the world.

The opening of the 51st BEMUS is in the hands of the leading opera stars: soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Charles Castronovo, who perform accompanied by the RTS Symphony Orchestra and conductor Bojan Suđić. Angela Gheorghiu is widely considered the worthy successor of Maria Callas. Gheorghiu first gained renown as Violetta (La Traviata) at Covent Garden, which paved way to a successful career. Today, Angela Gheorghiu enchants the audiences singing leading soprano roles on the most famous opera stages all over the world including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Covent Garden in London, Vienna State Opera and La Scala in Milan. Charles Castronovo sings the most important tenor roles on opera stages and festivals worldwide such as the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Gardn, Bavarian State Opera, Paris Opera, festivals in Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence and Verbier.

The masters of Serbian jazz-trumpet, Duško Gojković and Stjepko Gut, share the stage with the RTS Big Band.

Legendary Serbian flutist Ljubiša Jovanović, celebrates his 40th career anniversary at the 51st BEMUS on a concert which features a number of renowned international guests.

Straight from the Windsor Castle, the exceptional vocal ensemble “The Queen’s six” – the official vocal ensemble of the St George’s Chapel – makes its BEMUS debut.

Belgrade audience will be able to enjoy the concert of another famous British musician, the cellist Natalie Clein, as well as the concert of the foremost baroque music specialist, violinist and countertenor Dmitry Sinkovsky and his ensemble “La voce instrumentale”.

Former “wunderkind” and the youngest student in the history of the Shanghai Conservatory and today one of the leading Chinese virtuosi of the younger generation, the pianist Niu Niu will surely astonish the audience with his solo recital.

BEMUS joins the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the National Theatre in Belgrade with the performance of the opera “Koštana,” the so-called “Serbian Carmen” by Petar Konjović, directed by Jug Radivojević.

The closing concert marks another important jubilee – the 80th anniversary of the RTS Choir, the best professional choral ensemble in Serbia. On this occasion, they will, together the HRT Choir from Zagreb perform the “All-night Vigil” by Sergei Rachmaninov.

The concert of the superstar violinist Vanessa-Mae, well known even to those who are not regular classical music audience, guarantees to bring in huge crowds and great atmosphere to Sava center on 10th  October!

The programs of the 51st BEMUS take place at the Sava center, Kolarac Hall, Kombank Hall, City Hall, National Museum and National Theatre.
