Under the slogan “Steps of freedom,” within the project “Social inclusion for a dignified life of Roma and other vulnerable persons in Serbia 2023-2026,” a two-day Forum of Roma activism was held in the cultural institution “Parobrod” in the municipality of Stari Grad
The event brought together Roma activists, representatives of local governments and experts from various fields, providing a platform for discussion about the position of Roma in Serbia and the possibilities for improving their position.
During the forum, eight thematic debates were held, which dealt with key aspects of the life of the Roma community:
1. Borba protiv ciganizma – they discussed the problems of discrimination against Roma and measures to improve equality.
2. Education – the importance of quality education as a basic prerequisite for social inclusion was emphasized.
3. Media – the position of Roma in the media and the importance of strengthening Roma newsrooms for the affirmation of the community were analyzed.
4. Migration and returnees – participants discussed the challenges of returnees after the implementation of the readmission agreement.
5. Political perspective – opportunities and challenges for more active participation of Roma in the political life of Serbia are analyzed.
6. Culture – the importance of preserving Roma cultural identity and promoting it through art and cultural initiatives was emphasized.
7. Housing and legalization – the topic covered the problems of informal settlements and the need for their legalization.
8. Culture of memory – the importance of preserving collective memory for the identity and solidarity of the Roma community was highlighted.
Special attention was attracted by the forum on culture, where the artist Zejna Murkić spoke. In her address, she emphasized the importance of art as a means of expression and empowerment:
“Culture is a way to preserve the roots, but also an opportunity to show the potential and wealth of our community through creativity.”
One of the speakers was Igor Jovanović, deputy president of the Belgrade City Assembly and a long-time activist for Roma rights. He emphasized the importance of the forum as a space for dialogue and cooperation:
“The “Steps of Freedom” forum reminds us that every step towards equality is significant. Together, through activism and collaboration, we can achieve a more inclusive future for all.
