His Excellency Mr. Amr Aljowaily, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, visited on Saturday, July 4, 2020 Sombor City Museum. As a result of his visit, it was agreed to hold the summer program Days of Egyptian Culture at the Sombor City Museum.
The reason for this type of cooperation was the exhibition “Under the Spotlight – Ancient Egyptian Collections in Museums in Serbia”, within which objects from the Egyptian collection of the archeological department of this museum were exhibited. The exhibition presented some of the most valuable and until then rarely (or never) exhibited objects from the ancient Egyptian collections of Serbian museums, and it was held in 2019 at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade and is the result of cooperation between 11 institutions. The exhibition was organized to mark 111 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Egypt.
In the light of good will, fostering mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries, it was agreed to hold the Days of Egyptian Culture at the end of the summer in the premises of the City Museum of Sombor. The program would include exhibitions that give a true overview of the ubiquitous fascination with Egypt and its ancient culture (jewelry, calligraphy and architecture).
A lecture on civilization in the Nile Valley and the secrets hidden by the Egyptian collection of the Sombor City Museum will be given by historian Nenad Markovic, one of the authors of the exhibition “Under the Spotlight – Ancient Egyptian Collections in Museums in Serbia”. The evening would be enriched with films from Egyptian cinematography as well as gastronomic specialties.
The first step in the successful cooperation is the temporary transfer of a painting by Nagwa Ghorab called “Egyptian Arabian horse” from the private collection of His Excellency Mr. Amr Aljowaily, which will soon be shown to visitors of the Sombor City Museum.
