The global pandemic is a huge challenge for everyone, including our diplomatic network.
Most of our work is now focused on the situation here in Serbia, which we are following closely, as well as your government’s response to it. Supporting British citizens residing in Serbia and the region is our priority now. Of course, I have an obligation towards the health and well-being of my staff and their families.
We are completely following the recommendations of the UK health authorities and local institutions, with which we are in constant contact. In light of the new situation, we have recommended that most of our employees work from home and are considering other formats of “smarter work”.
“The team at my embassy, and I am referring to both British diplomats and our Serbian counterparts, is doing a great job,” Sian MacLeod, the UK ambassador to Serbia, says for the Danas daily when asked what measures had been implemented to protect the employees at the Embassy from the coronavirus outbreak.
Asked what message she had for the Serbian citizens during this pandemic, Ambassador McLeod replied: “In times of crisis, we all need more solidarity and responsibility.”
“The most important thing is that we all understand the gravity of the situation and follow the recommendations of experts, health and state authorities. This pandemic is a global challenge that we must tackle together. As an embassy, we are considering if there is any other way we can get involved and help with the response to the epidemic in Serbia and our local community. This is a really difficult time; some families are separated because of this situation. I also know that many people in Serbia are worried about their relatives in the United Kingdom and vice versa. My thoughts are with all of them,” the British ambassador says.
