The Polish Embassy in Beograde ceremoniously opened the monument of Dr Ludvik Hirschfeld.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the city government in Belgrade, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Polish community, numerous media and guests from abroad, Ms. M. Balińska – cousin of L. Hirschfeld, who lives in Switzerland, member and former director of the Institute for Immunology and Experimental Therapy “Ludvik Hirschfeld” in Wroclaw, Professor A. Gurski and representatives of the Polish Army (General S. Źmuda, Col. S. Majhszak). Ludwig Hirschfeld is well known and appreciated in Serbia for the fact that during the First World War he volunteered to serve in the Serbian Army as a doctor and to help prevent the spread of the typhus epidemic among soldiers.
