Every year, more than 90,000 passengers enjoy riding the “Nostalgia” train through Šarganska osmica, and since the reconstruction of the railway until today, almost 1,500,000 guests have had a unique experience on this museum-tourist railway
Impressive figures testify to the unique importance of the railway, which attracts tourists from all over the world, eager to explore untouched nature and enjoy the engineering endeavor of the 20th century.
Šarganska osmica, a unique architectural wonder, celebrated its 100th anniversary. Referring to the great jubilee, Acting the director of Srbijavoz, Ivan Bulajić pointed out that in January 1924, a train passed through Mokra Gora for the first time. He also reminded that the construction of the narrow-gauge railway, which connected Belgrade and Sarajevo, began back in 1916, and that part of the local railway is part of that great historical undertaking that still has great significance for this region.
“One of the biggest engineering endeavors was the construction of a railway that overcomes 300 meters above sea level, in the shape of a figure eight. Sometime in 1974, this railway was unfortunately closed to traffic, but thanks to the efforts of numerous Mokrogorians and railway workers, it was saved from oblivion. In 2004, it was reopened – this time as a historical railway and a tourist attraction of the Zlatibor region,” said the acting Srbijavoz director Ivan Bulajić.
The “Nostalgia” train, which daily transports tourists along a 15-kilometer route from Mokra Gora, via Jatar, to Šargan Vitas, offers an unforgettable experience through beautiful mountain landscapes.
The positive impressions of visitors, which are reflected in the media, social networks and polls, are the best confirmation of the success of Šarganska Osmica. Visitors from all continents, including Australia, New Zealand and the USA, come to enjoy this priceless tourist gem, while railway enthusiasts, especially from Japan, are regular guests. The railway was also the location for shooting popular films and series such as “Life is a miracle” and “Montevideo, God saw you”. In addition, numerous events were held, including vintage car shows and art colonies.
Šarganska osmica is not only a historical monument, but also a destination that continues to inspire and connect people, creating opportunities for the further development of tourism in Serbia.
